Linking the area of the preserve where there is still a rabbit and improving it by creating shelters and food areas, improvements that will undoubtedly help other species such as the partridge. The project takes place in Andevalo onubense, in Valverde del Camino (Huelva), and is written by the technicians who have carried it out.
PREVENFOR HISPANIA, SL
The realization of the project to improve the habitat and recovery of the wild rabbit in the Huelva area of Andévalo has been carried out in the municipality of Valverde del Camino (Huelva), and the Society of Hunters of Valverde del Camino, in their material, human work. and economic. This work tries to recover the populations of wild rabbits in one of the least dense areas of the entire peninsula, which in the past had abundant populations of this lagomorph.
In this report of the May Hunting Trophy, the implementation of the project will be developed step by step, here we leave you a summary of the results.
From the execution of the project to the date of writing this article, a series of censuses and sampling have been carried out, for which the following methodology has been followed:
First of all, all the mouths used and the mouths created by the rabbits in the scrubs have been counted. In addition, majanas with predation symptoms have been counted and majanas with outgrowths and rabbit ducks have been counted.
On the other hand, a monthly census has been carried out using a linear transept of 577 m, in which data have been compiled on fresh pits, fresh outgrowths and the presence of predators.
30% of the majanos have new mouths opened by the rabbits, adding a total of 25 new mouths opened in the set of 43 majanos , which gives us a very positive idea that the rabbit is using other areas to enter , following its natural behavior.
In addition, 48% of the machinists have their used ceramic mouths making up a total of 34 mouths used in the total of 43 machinists. This indicates the effectiveness of this type of material for these performances by not missing them for having a texture similar to that found in nature.
The presence of signs of predators is present in 20% of the majanos making a total of 10 signs in 43 majanos. This warns us that the increase in the rabbit population is creating a migration of the predator populations towards the unit of action. Signs of predators such as fox, wild boar, and meloncillo have been seen . In addition, an increase in birds of prey is being seen in the area.
Regarding excrescences, these are barely present in the majanos, 4.6%, which is due to the fact that the rabbit usually positions its latrines away from the majanos.
According to the census data obtained, rabbit populations in the area increased from May to June., which is logical in the area as it is the time of departure of the majano de gazapos. On the other hand, the population had a decline in the month of August according to the census. This data is not entirely true since in these months of high temperatures these animals slow down their metabolism and are usually much less active than in the spring months. What is certain is that September and October have been critical months for the populations, since viral hemorrhagic pneumonia has caused great losses. In addition, myxomatosis also affects them and, although it no longer causes death, if it leaves them defenseless before the attack of predators and if they have increased in the area, it will be easier for them to suffer death due to predation.
With these obtained data we can say that the level of success of the project is quite high . This diagnosis is the result of the analysis, by the technical writer of this article, of the data obtained throughout the months that the project has been running and is endorsed by a national and international body that agrees with said diagnosis.
Rabbit populations are increasing, both due to the reproduction of rabbits and the ability of the environment to attract more individuals.
If the rate of population growth continues as it is, in less than a year we will be able to encircle the groups of majanos to get high-density nuclei and thus be able to get populations resistant to autochthonous diseases in our area, which would be The ideal.
As a result of the success of the action and seeing that the edge effect is increasing every time, it has been chosen, according to the criteria of the technical editor and the aforementioned body, to expand in the next year, 2017, in another 10 ha the unit of action instead of carrying out another of the same extension in another territorial area.
If this system continues in this way, with these population increases, it is very likely that from the 4th year on, hunting will be possible in the area. To do this, we must continue monitoring populations and improving all the actions proposed and described year after year.
